You Have To Open It

The Bride Who Recognized Her Mother's Watch

The girl’s sobbing grew increasingly frantic, her small body trembling as she struggled to catch her breath long enough to speak clearly. Rosalind reached out gently, placing a steadying hand on the child’s shoulder, trying desperately to calm her enough to continue their conversation.

“It’s okay,” Rosalind whispered softly, though her own voice carried an unmistakable tremor she couldn’t quite suppress. “Just tell me what happened. Please.”

The girl looked up at her with wide, desperate eyes, tears streaming steadily down her dirt-streaked face. She pointed urgently toward the watch still clutched tightly in Rosalind’s trembling hands. “You have to open it,” she said, her small voice cracking with distress. “You have to open it right now.”

Thomas frowned deeply, clearly growing impatient with the strange, unsettling turn the conversation had taken. “Open it? Rosalind, this is ridiculous. We need to get back to the reception before people start asking questions.”

But Rosalind couldn’t ignore the raw, unmistakable urgency radiating from the frightened child in front of her. Something about the way the girl’s eyes locked onto the watch, desperate and pleading, told her this wasn’t simply childish nonsense or confusion. Whatever the girl needed her to see, she was clearly terrified of what might happen if Rosalind refused.

Rosalind’s fingers hovered over the small clasp on the side of the antique watch, her heart pounding rapidly as a low, ominous unease settled deeper into her chest. She had opened this exact watch hundreds of times throughout her childhood, watching her mother check the time before dinner, before bed, before every important moment they shared together. But she had never once opened it feeling quite this afraid of what she might find inside.

“Okay,” Rosalind whispered, more to herself than to anyone else in the hallway. “Okay, I’ll open it.”
