The Deal Is Off · Chapter 4 of 5

Four Words That Changed the Room

The Deal Is Off

“Harold,” Emily called, her voice carrying clear and steady across the ballroom, stronger than she’d thought herself capable of just moments before. The family butler stepped forward immediately, as he always had, weathering thirty years of Harrington family celebrations and crises with the same unshakeable composure.

“Tell my father the deal is off,” Emily said, each word deliberate, final, and unmistakably clear to every guest still watching in stunned silence.

Harold’s expression didn’t waver. “Yes, Miss Emily,” he replied, with the same formal precision he’d have used to confirm a dinner reservation, already reaching for the phone in his breast pocket.

The reaction across the ballroom was immediate and visceral. Whispers erupted through the seated guests — the merger, the deal, the reason this wedding had ever been arranged in the first place, was apparently not as untouchable as Daniel and his mother had assumed. Constance’s mocking smile froze, then faltered entirely, her diamond-laden hands going still mid-clap for the first time since she’d started.

Daniel’s confident posture cracked in an instant, his eyes widening with the sudden, dawning realization of exactly what he’d just thrown away — not simply a bride he’d never truly valued, but the entire foundation of wealth and opportunity her father’s company represented to his family’s future.

“Emily, wait—” He took a step toward her now, all his earlier coldness evaporating into something closer to panic. “You don’t understand what you’re doing—”

“I understand perfectly,” Emily said, and for the first time since walking into this ballroom, her voice didn’t waver at all.
